The ship turned around to do a search for about four hours. and was late getting into port on November 5. The cruise ship was scheduled to dock in Galveston at about 8 a.m. but the search delayed the return for about four hours.
A passenger who was onboard said the search by the cruise ship was unsuccessful.
The cruise ship was about 110 nautical miles southeast of Sabine when the man was reported missing, Coast Guard officials said. Helicopters from Coast Guard bases in New Orleans, Houston, Corpus Christi and Mobile, Ala., were sent to the area. Several other ships in the area at the time also contributed to the initial sea search.
"All of them conducted multiple searches,'' Coast Guard Petty Officer Adam Eggers said. The Coast Guard Cutter Heron, based in Sabine Pass, has joined the search for the missing man, Eggers said. The Coast Guard said it searched 520 square miles with helicopters, boats and jets but did not find the man. The coast guard has now ended the search.
The FBI has been notified, and has begun an investigation. The cause for the fall hasn't been determined, but investigators working on the case have ruled out foul play, FBI Agent Shauna Dunlap said.
