A United States Air Force weapons officer based in England pleaded guilty to child pornography charges October 18, 2006 and was sentenced to nine months’ confinement and dismissal from the United States Air Force.

Chandler was charged with three specifications of violating Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, a provision set aside for any offenses not covered in other articles that bring discredit upon the military.

Two other specifications under the charge include possessing child pornography while at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar and in Cambridge, England, from 2004 to 2005

Capt. Charles L. Chandler of the 494th Fighter Squadron kept the images on his computer while serving at four different installations dating back to 2002, said 48th Fighter Wing spokesman Airman 1st Class Michael Hess.

The incidents occurred at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Fla., and Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., between March 18, 2002 and April 2, 2004; at Lakenheath between April 3, 2004 and June 10, 2005; and at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, between Feb. 24, 2005, and April 26, 2005.

Chandler admitted in court before sentencing that he had taken with him thousands of pornographic images of adults and children when he deployed to Qatar from Lakenheath, England in early 2005. He said he stored them on his Xbox’s hard drive. After transferring the pornography to his personal computer while in Qatar, another airman discovered the images.

Along with the images — some of which depicted children tracked by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children — investigators found pornographic short stories that involved children.

While inspecting his computer, investigators also found journal entries where Chandler wrote about meeting an underage girl on a cruise ship.

Chandler was also charged, and pleaded guilty to  a violation of Article 92, when he allegedly disobeyed a general order banning pornography while in Qatar

In asking for a sentence of dismissal with no confinement, defense attorney Maj. Stephen Ganter said it was “painful” that Charles L. Chandler would now never realize his dream of being an astronaut, adding that the stigma of an Air Force dismissal would be its own life sentence.
