Category 5 Cyclone Pam Hits Archipelago, Heroes: Carnival Corp Brings Hope To Devastated Vanuatu

Heroes: Carnival Corp Brings Hope To Devastated Vanuatu

When category 5 cyclone Pam hit the Vanuatu islands, flattening them, their isolated location in the South Pacific, made rescue and recovery a huge challenge, with only a few industrialized, nearby nations able to offer massive assistance quickly.

As days went by, without contact with many of archipelago's 82 islands which comprise Vanuatu, a massive relief effort was actually underway. Staging of relief supplies in Brisbane and Sydney, Australia had begun with the first wave of relief supplies, 30 tons of emergency being assembled for humanitarian aid.

The relief effort includes the basics of water and can food and direly needed infrastructure repair items such as temporary shelter with tarps and tents, as well as gas generators to provide power with the addition of huge mulching machines to hasten clearing of mountains of debris left in the wake of Cyclone Pam.

Two cruise lines which have been bringing passengers from primarily from New Zealand and Australia for decades are leading the relief effort with massive cruise ships filled with passengers, delivering the needed supplies to help residents of Vanuatu.

The cruise ships have typically called at Vanuatu's capital, Port Villa, allowing passengers to disembark to explore the lush beauty. Now, numerous cruise ships will stop to deliver aid without disembarking passengers, Carnival Legend and Carnival Spirit along with P&O Dawn Princess and P&O Pacific Pearl will be making calls at the devastated nation.

Reports say Carnival Australia and the Carnival Corporation have donated a combined $300,000 to the Save the Children fund for relief efforts in Vanuatu, with $150,000 coming from Carnival Australia. Carnival Corporation chairman Micky Arison matched those funds personally with an $150,000 donation from a family trust.
