Gofundme Description:
My dad, Shawn Whetsell, is a acute myeloid leukemia (AML) survivor/current fighter. Almost two years ago, Dad won his fight against AML and lived in remission for close to two years without complications. My family and I thought the cancer was gone for good; his treatments put him into remission quickly and it never came back. Weekly, then biweekly, then monthly checkups after he completed treatment continuously showed cancer free labs. Dad began to regain strength and was able to return to work for a time (when work was available). A few months ago, Dad began to experience stomach problems similar to those he had when his cancer surfaced the first time. He missed a day of work and attended his routine monthly checkup and his results were abnormal. Further testing showed that the cancer had come back, and Dad needed treatment again. The day following the confirmed cancer re-diagnosis, my mother, Sandy, and I took him back to the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center where he had received treatments the first time around. He received one intense round of chemotherapy and stayed in Chicago for most of November (including Thanksgiving), and thankfully was able to return home in time to enjoy Christmas and bring in the New Year with his family. On Jan 15, Dad returned to the hospital for a second intense round of chemotherapy and then received stem cells donated by his brother, Tony, on the 20th. So far he is responding well to the treatment and we hope he will be able to return home in 2-3 weeks in time to celebrate his 33rd wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day.

It has been a rough 2 years emotionally and financially for my family, and this long-term fight has taken a major toll on my dad physically. Dad’s birthday is April 9th. With a lot of love and generosity from our family and friends and a little help from God, I am hoping we can give my dad the best birthday present ever. Unfortunately, I don’t have the funds to do it alone. That is where all of you come in! One of the things that has been consistently at the very top of my dad’s bucket list is going on a cruise with his family. If you know my dad, you are well aware that he is one of the most selfless people in the world and spends a lot of his time and money helping other people (especially his family) and I can honestly say I can’t remember my parents ever spending their money selfishly. I have made a budget for a trip I am hoping to take my dad on toward the end of this summer before my brother and I have to report back for school. I have selected a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise through Carnival that will board in Miami, FL on August 15, 2015
