Carnival Cruise Ship Brawl August 12, 2010

If you follow the evidence, eventually it will lead you to the truth. It is the only way to get to the truth and this case demonstrates, perhaps more than any, that the word "truth" is subjective and means different things to different people. In this case the "truth" warped, morphed and was mangled worst than my wedding rings when my hand got smashed a couple weeks ago.

Starting with Carnival Cruise Lines' (CCL) the "truth" states that ten passengers were evicted from Carnival Dream after a brawl broke out. The line says another passenger "elected" to leave with the group of ten who were ordered off the ship. It seems unfathomable to me that corporate doesn't know what is going on their ships when it comes to passengers leaving the voyage mid-stream.

After all, when the ship returns to an American port, the captain has some 'splaining' to do to the U.S. Government when all his passengers don't come back home aboard the ship and generally there is fine to be paid.

Clearly, the cruise line knows exactly how many were disembarked, though they publicly stated a passenger count meant to downplay the incident. A photograph taken of the evicted group standing on the dock waiting for transportation to the airport shows at least 18 people standing with their luggage waiting for the tram to take them to their ride to the airport in Cancun, hours away.

Since that may be a partial count, with others yet to be disembarked, the number could be as high as some reports indicating, 20, 25 or 30 were taken off the ship in Mexico. The photograph was taken by a travel agent who was aboard the ship as well. He calls the group "thugs" in a forum post.

The story on cruise forums ran from one end of the rumor spectrum to the other. From this collection of stories we find the truth hiding within. Apparently there were two particular groups of young New Yorkers from Brooklyn and Staten Island aboard the ship. Neither were related but there seems to be some animosity between at least some members of each group the night the brawl broke out.

This lead some passengers aboard to label the two groups as "gangs". From appearances, based on a few photographs I have seen of the one group, these were average, everyday young adults taking a cruise, not a "gang" or "thugs" as some forum posters alleged. Had I seen these people on a college campus, I wouldn't have noticed them because they would not have stood out from the others.
