Glatter was driving a rented moped in Nassau, Bahamas when the scooter crashed into a wall on Eastern Road. He had just arrived in Nassau on a cruise ship, prior to renting the scooter.
It is unknown which cruise ship he arrived on.
He and his passenger, fiance Kathy Warne both had helmets on. Glatter sustained injuries to the head and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Warne was conscious when emergency personnel arrived on the scene according to Walter Evans, assistant superintendent of police for New Providence and the Southern Bahamas.
Eric S. Glatter was an attorney from Boca Raton, Florida. He practiced family law, commercial litigation and specializing in bankruptcy. He had been practicing law in South.
Warne told authorities the moped steering appeared to have a problem at the time of the crash, that resulted in the moped going out of control.
The warning is dated February 5, 2007, in part, seen below.
SAFETY AND SECURITY
"The water sports and scooter rental industries in the Bahamas are not carefully regulated. Visitors should rent equipment only from reputable operators, and should insist on sufficient training before using the equipment. Every year people are killed or injured by the improper use of scooters, jet-skis, and personal watercraft or by the careless or reckless operation of such equipment by others. You should insist on seeing proof that operators have sufficient medical and liability insurance. Travelers should also invest in low-cost traveler’s insurance that includes medical evacuations, as most American insurance companies do not cover this (please refer to the section on medical facilities in this document for additional information)."
Many private websites also warn about renting scooters in the Bahamas, saying the roads are bad, traffic is bad and the scooters are poorly maintained. Yet the cruise lines are still promoting the scooter rentals and excursions, with some lines still booking them directly for passengers.
