Two crewmen from a cruise ship docked at Port Everglades, Florida were held without bond in the Broward County Jail after allegedly raping and robbing an 18-year-old college student who was vacationing on Fort Lauderdale's Strip.
Police arrested Melvin Enrique Romero, 20, and Hector Romeo Juarez, 35, after a passer-by said he saw them attacking the young woman behind a wall in the 500 block of State Road A1A about 1 a.m.
When police shined a light in the area, they found the New Bedford, Massachussets woman on the ground. Romero was standing over her, police said, and Juarez was walking away.
Police found the woman's identification and traveler's checks in Romero's possession. The men denied raping her.
Romero and Juarez work on the SS Rhapsody. The men were charged with sexual battery and strong-arm robbery
