Details:
This incident has been incorrectly reported in most major media reports as happening in March 2007.
Holland America Line ( HAL ) Prinsendam was on a 66 day world cruise at the time of the incident which includes South America and Antarctica. Initial reports were not received until March 2007.
Prinsendam was hit by a rogue wave in the Antarctic segment around the tip of South America. The ship had left Ushuaia and had rounded Cape Horn when it ran into hurricane force winds and then 2 rogue waves. They were about 40 feet high.
A passenger report says 40 were injured and the ship was damaged. There were many broken dishes onboard, things thrown from the shelves, broken glass and other types of minor damage. Apparently there were only cold meals served for several meals after the event, as the crew cleaned up the mess.
The posted video below and says, "Taken from the Crow's Nest (12th deck bar) of the Prinsendam Feb. 1, 2007 on the day we got hit by the two rogue waves. We had recently passed Cape Horn at the tip of South America. The video was shot through windows covered with salt spray."
Reports on this incident are few and mostly incorrect, as HAL never officially reported the incident.
There is another video that says, "Taken through the cabin window on deck 4 of the Prinsendam. We were in hurricane strength winds on the day we got hit by two rogue waves." It is seen below. Double left click in the center of the screen to start the video.
