Jonathan Kallas
Passenger Dies From Norovirus
Carnival Cruise Lines - Miracle - February 1, 2005
Jonathan Kallas, was a second year chemistry student at the University of Michigan, was a strong, healthy, non-smoking, 21 year old,  married man, father of a 4 year old, who took a cruise, caught the norovirus, then died.

Jonathan Kallas got sick late in the trip. His mother and wife also became sick, and all three tested positive for norovirus.

They arrived home January 30, 2005.

Two days after coming home, his wife Julie came from home from work around 6pm and found him dead.

Family members say they believe he caught the gastrointestinal illness from food contaminated by ship workers with poor sanitation practices.

The Oakland County medical examiner's office said in 2005 that Jonathan Kallas died from complications of norovirus.

A $20 Million class action suit has been filed in Miami Federal Court on behalf all passengers on the voyage who became ill with the norovirus, by attorney Ken Hardin.

According to the suit, several passengers developed flu-like symptoms after consuming food or water aboard the ship that was contaminated with the Norovirus -- a type of virus that causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The suit was quoted as saying, "The Defendant breached their duty to prepare and provide food and/or water that was fit for human consumption, healthful and suitable for all persons."

Carnival Cruise Lines spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz was cited as saying the Carnival Miracle always has a high inspection score with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and that the ship has never had a reported norovirus outbreak during the two years it has been in service.
