A man reported his wife missing on New Year's Eve, after he was unable to locate her. The woman, a 62 year old German national, was on a cruise with her husband and other family members when she disappeared.
The group was on a cruise that left Southampton on December 17, 2006 on a Christmas and New Year voyage that included Madeira and the Canary Islands.
The vessel was in Portuguese waters between Madeira and its home port of Southampton in the United Kingdom at the time.
Cruise ship crew did a full search of the ship, then the ship turned around to do a search of the sea, but the woman was not located.
Falmouth as well as the Southampton based Maritime and Coastguard Agency were also alerted to the disappearance.
A search and rescue personnel were scrambled in Lisbon and an aerial search was carried out in the area but the passenger was not found.
As darkness fell, the sea and air search was called off for the day and QE2 resumed her course for Southampton while the search by the Lisbon authorities resumed the following day but again nothing was seen.
Detectives from Hampshire police boarded the QE2 when it docked at Southampton and spoke with crew members, passengers and the missing woman's husband.
An investigation is underway at this time.
This area of the globe is quickly becoming the top location for missing passengers. Other passengers who disappeared in this region recently were George Allen Smith IV, Micki Kanesaki, and Elizabeth Galeana. This is a change from the past. Most previous disappearances were in the Caribbean or Mexican waters.
