On Wednesday, January 13, 2016, a woman, 59, and her partner from Brazil were kicked off Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Solstice cruise ship after she was observed shoplifting from one of the luxury stores aboard while the cruise ship was sailing to Port Chalmers, Dunedin in New Zealand from from Fiordland.
The woman stole a designer Michael Kors handbag valued at $400, then took the handbag back to her cruise ship cabin where it was later recovered by cruise ship security. The incident was recorded by the ship's security video on day 9 of a 14 Night cruise.
The theft investigation began when staff at one of the Shops on the Boulevard store on Deck 4 noticed the handbag was missing and ship's security was called. When the store security camera footage was viewed, it clearly showed the woman walking out of the store with expensive designer handbag.
The Brazilian woman spoke Portuguese and was interviewed through an interpretor after the cruise ship officers notified Senior Constable Steve Tvrdeic, of Port Chalmers of the theft and he came to do an investigation into the incident.
Tvrdeic said that the cruise ship wasn't going to pursue prosecution but the couple had been told to leave Celebrity Solstice and will be traveling back home on their own."She has ruined their holiday. It's just an unfortunate set of circumstances and people should know better.'It's not something they would be very proud of I'd say. They showed a lot of remorse.", Tvrdeic said.
