But, there are times when a story is so extraordinary, so sensational, that a sensational headline really needs to top a story. This is one of those cases.
Cruise Bruise has been warning passengers about the dangers of taking cruises to Costa Rica, particularly the town of Limon. In Limon, the kiddie prostitution trade runs wild, with children called on cell phones in schools, to come into town to service cruise ship passengers.
The fact that Carnival Cruise Lines would still call at the port, is unconscionable knowing the extend of the problem, which includes a problem with child prostitution, child sex slavery, and a dangerous situation all around for cruise ship passengers who venture into town. In my view, to call at that port, makes them pimps of child prostitutes. They know there is a problem, and yet, they call there anyway.
So, it comes as no surprise that the first thing Carnival Cruise Lines did after one of their passengers killed a man in the town of Limon, was to say that the passengers had organized the excursion into town on their own, as they quickly steered clear of any responsibility in this incident. For Carnival, this seems to make everything alright.
This however, does nothing at all to explain why, when they know how severely dangerous Limon is, they would tempt passengers with an exotic port, knowing perfectly well, there will always be those passengers that think the situation has been blown out of proportion, and will venture into town, in spite of warnings. If you have to warn your passengers of the severe dangers of town, why are you calling at that port at all? That is the question of the day.
Yet, on Wednesday February 21, 2007 this is exactly what happened. Carnival Liberty called at Limon, Costa Rica. A group of 12 elderly passengers onboard, organized an excursion into Limon to visit the local beach.
While they were there, a group of three men accosted the group, one had a .38 handgun, the other two with knives and they attempted to rob the group. This is when things go wrong. One cruise ship passenger, an ex-military man, who decide to fight the attackers off, grabbed Warner Segura who had the gun, put him into a headlock, and snapped his neck.
Now, with one thief having a broken neck, the other two thieves fled, leaving their cohort in crime to die on the beach. The passengers sought medical aid for the gunman, but they were unable to do anything for him.
The Red Cross said they treated Warner Segura without success, and also treated a cruise passenger for an anxiety attack.
The cruise line said the guests were questioned by local law enforcement and then returned to the ship, whose departure from Limon was slightly delayed to await their return. Carnival Liberty, continued on its scheduled itinerary, with a port call scheduled in Colon, Panama.
According to Luis Hernandes, chief of police of Limon, no chargers were filed against the cruise ship passengers as they were the real victims in this crime. "They were in their right to defend themselves after being held up," Hernandez said. Hernandez said Segura had previous charges against him for assaults.
This story is sensational on many levels. First, that a group of senior citizens would venture into this well known cesspool, is nothing short of amazing. Apparently none of them had been to Cruise Bruise. Otherwise, they would have known that their money was supporting child prostitution and child sex slavery, and surely they would have avoided this destination, and this was not the first time a cruise ship passenger had been robbed at gun point in Limon.
Second, that there was a hero in this group, that might have saved the lives of 12 people, yet nobody will name him, is simply unheard of. We applaud this man for risking his life to save his fellow passengers. He is a hero.
Even more amazing is the fact that a man kills another, and he is free to go on his merry way in a third world country, without a long drawn out investigation, that further dramatizes him and his family, is nothing short of a miracle. We have seen people held in port, missing their ship, for much less.
But, the most amazing thing about this story, is that this week, Carnival Cruise Lines will still call at that port, having suffered a 'near miss' catastrophe. Imagine had things turned out differently, and our headlines would have read, "12 CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES SENIOR CITIZEN PASSENGERS MURDERED ON COSTA RICA BEACH DURING ROBBERY"
Let this article serve as notice to all cruise ship passengers, that Limon, Costa Rica is one of the most dangerous ports of call in the eastern Caribbean. It needs to be avoided.
Let this also serve as notice to Carnival Cruise Lines, that should their passengers die in a blood bath at Limon, the attorneys of those victims, will find this story, and will say Carnival Cruise Lines was negligent for continuing to call at this port, in spite of this 'near miss' incident. This cruise ship passenger was not so lucky, shot in Limon - Read
