Dieter Vogt and his wife, Myrtha Vogt, were on the third day of an 11-day cruise of Norway's fjords
Myrtha said she was going to take a walk on deck, a family friend said.
A few minutes later, Vogt heard horns blowing.
He joined others looking over the ship's railing and saw a body in the water, but said he did not immediately know the body was his wife.
Authorities said a 35-year-old former mental patient, who has not been identified, admitted he threw Myrtha Vogt overboard.
When the person was caught, he admitted it. He said, 'Yeah, I just had to throw someone over.'
Tromsoe Police Department, said the suspect had bought a one-day ticket and was on the boat alone.
Vogt said he had returned briefly to the ship to thank passengers and the crew for their help. He said he bore no ill will toward the cruise line.
