15 passengers aboard the Celebrity Cruise Line ship, Summit,  were on a seven day cruise. The cruise departed August 6, 2006 from Seward.

They decided to take a port of call shore excursion in Juneau Alaska.

The group of passengers, along with two guides, were on a hiking excursion via a tour bus in the hills outside of town, during a rain storm.

The bus driver thinking it was more important to avoid potholes, than keep the bus on the road, veered to the right onto the shoulder, in an excessively hard right turn.

When a front tire went over the embankment, the bus slid over the cliff, landing 25 feet down the embankment, flipped over on its side, coming to rest against trees. But, the driver did miss the potholes.

The bus driver, Gary Clement, 60, employeed by Gastineau Guiding, a tour operator, was cited by police on a charge of reckless driving,

Most of the passengers had managed to evacuate the bus before ambulances arrived. However, one passenger required emergency personnel arriving on the scene to assist with evacuation.

Ten passengers who had injuries of bumps, bruises and a few broken bones, and were treated at local area hospitals. The cruise sihip sent one of their doctors to the hospital where passengers were being treated.

One passenger had a chest injury and remained hospitalized.
