Britons on holiday may have been duped into taking part in mass orgies on a cruise ship by being served cocktails spiked with pure alcohol and ecstasy, authorities on Cyprus suggest.

The night voyages were sold as a pleasant mini-cruise. British touts in the anything goes resort are thought to have taken the lead in rounding up clients at £30 a head.

Police said the drugs and "bombes" - a lethal mix of cheap spirits and pure  alcohol - may have been given to women passengers oblivious to the organisers' motives.  Police said it appears there was widespread use of ecstasy on board.

The bombes would have rendered people senseless. It would also explain why it took so long for the boat to be reported. 'What is particularly disturbing is that most of the passengers on any given cruise were men.

Other ferry boat owners said they had seen girls returning from a night on the high seas battered and bruised. A lot like it, but a lot don't and come back really shocked according to Dimitris Christodoulou, who operates day-time Party Cruises out of the port.

A girl from Manchester, came back with a black eye because she had refused to remove her top. She asked if I knew of a lawyer so that she could get the bas-----.

Until this year, the Ayia Napa Queen ran nightly cruises with as many as 250 passengers crammed on board. Once outside Cyprus' territorial waters, 'the fun' allegedly started.

Three Greek Cypriots believed to be the organisers of orgy trips off the coast of Cyprus were yesterday put under arrest by the island's authorities. Among those arrested at the Ayia Napa police station were the captain of the vessel, the Ayia Napa Queen, and party organisers.

The arrests came as officials pored over scores of still photographs of revellers involved in group sex on the ferry, which has been used for night cruises for holidaymakers since 1998.

It was clear from the pictures that mass sexual orgies were happening on board. The compromising pictures, which showed tourists in a state of undress and in a variety of sexual acts, some using fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.

Cypriots were scandalised when the private Mega TV channel exposed the sex cruises. Shots of nude passengers having sex or watching others having sex were broadcast on the news.

The Cypriot vessel was captained by a local who has been questioned. The cruises were managed by British operators, and began when the season started in April 2004.

One witness, a foreigner who took the pictures, said he saw around 300 ecstasy pills taken in a couple of hours.

Drink spiking has become such a problem that self-detection kits are avaliable for sale to the general public. They detect all the major date rape drugs and narcotics.
