Eight cruise ship passengers who were sailing aboard Holland America a Line Westerdam were on a sea plane sightseeing cruise ship excursion near Ketchikan when the DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter, a small float plane, crashed with the eight cruise ship passengers and the pilot aboard on Thursday, June 25, 2015.

Holland America Line Westerdam Excursion Plane Crash June 25, 2015

Holland America Line cruise ship Westerdam was on a seven-day cruise that departed Seattle on Saturday June 20, 2105. Westerdam was suppose to leave the port of Ketchikan, Alaska about 1 pm on Thursday, but stayed in port instead. See Holland America Live Cruise Ship Tracker for Westerdam. The next port of call was suppose to be Ogden Point in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on June 26 at 6 p.m.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG ) said that they received a report around 2:15 p.m., that the turboprop Otter operated by a Ketchikan-based tourism company Promech Air was overdue. An USCG search produced the plane wreckage. The plane wreckage was found against a granite rock face of a cliff, 800 feet above Ella Lake, about 800 miles southeast of Anchorage.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman in Alaska, Clint Johnson, said search crews found the "wreckage" in very remote, steep terrain. He said the condition of the pilot and eight passengers would not be known until rescue crews reached the scene.

The search and rescue (SAR) is currently at best. Alaska is in the period of the year known as the Midnight Sun, which is the period of the summer solstice which begins approximately June 21, when the sun is visible for the full 24 hours each day, given fair weather.

However, survival of the cruise ship passengers and the pilot is doubtful. Small aircraft crashes rarely result in any survivors.
