On May 30, 2016, multiple media outlets, including Metropolis News in Italy (knife photo credit), are reporting that a 31-year-old Jamaican, Celebrity Constellation cruise ship chef was arrested in Salerno, Italy after he stabbed a 38-year-old head chef from India.
The cruise ship crime arrest was made after the Jamaican chef wielding a butcher knife in the galley at 0500 hours attacked his supervisor during a heated verbal exchange. The Jamaican chef was only identified with the intials OG during news reports in Italy.
The incident allegedly took place when the Indian supervisor was lecturing the Jamaican chef on an employee issue. The Jamaican chef reportedly lost his temper after yet another lecture and lunged at his boss with a butcher knife stabbing him in the abdomen.
Local papers reported, "In the kitchen there were eight people, including cooks and waiters, who felt powerless to aggression: when they realized that the verbal altercation had degenerated, the Indian chef was already lying on the ground bleeding."
Police investigators were told that there had been some disagreements between the two in the past, but nothing so important to precipitate an attack. The Jamaican chef when questioned, admitted that he had acted instinctively, because he was exasperated by the tone used by his supervisor. The Jamaican was subjected to alcohol testing and tested positive for alcohol. He told police that he drank two gin beverages before arriving at work in the galley. Police said that he was not drunk, but appeared to be in a "daze".
Italian media reported that the head chef was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and was hospitalized in critical condition. Doctors said that the cut was very deep, and he came close to losing his spleen.
Giuliana Postiglione from Polizia di Stato said the Jamaican was transferred to Al Carcere di Fuorni Salerno, Italy, Prison & Correctional Facility on charges of attempted murder.
Salerno, Italy is located on the Gulf of Salerno on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
At the time of the incident Celebrity Constellation had about 3,000 passengers aboard and was sailing from Catania, a port city on Sicily's east coast, to Civitavecchia,(Rome)Italy.
