17 Cruise Ship Passengers Robbed
In St Kitts Came From Celebrity Mercury

November 14, 2010

A Sunday morning cruise ship excursion in St. Kitts on November 14, 2010 around 1100 hours, a bus full of Celebrity Cruises passengers who sailed in on the cruise ship Mercury found themselves sitting on the road, with a tree blocking the road.

When the bus driver got out to move the tree, two armed robbers exited the brush near the road announcing it was a robbery. Then, two more robbers exited the thick brush. The four thieves wearing blue clothing with a dark colored hood have a similar decription to gunmen who have pulled off other recent robberies in the area. Aboard the tour bus were 16 adults and a baby.

This is the first known group robbery that included a baby, though at least one other groups had children in it, making this case very significant as it shows the dangers that can be involved when traveling with children, especially in rural areas of foreign countries with access to outside communications is limited.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a popular destination for cruise ship tourists, a well-known fact on the island. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is located in Sandy Point Town. The bus was traveling along the access road to Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park in the vicinity of Lime Kiln when the robbery took place.

The passengers were robbed of their cash as well as cell phones, cameras, jewelry and other items that could be sold on the black market. As soon as the robbers presented themselves, the bus driver ran away into town to call police, according to a taxi driver.

On December 2, 2005, following a rash of armed robberies of delivery vehicles, Army Corporal Joseph Bergan paralyzed from the neck down while he was providing security for a Central Marketing Corporation (CEMACO) delivery truck when he was shot in the neck by robbers. CEMACO provides locally grown produce, dry goods and frozen foods. Having security to ride along with a food truck, is a hint at the larger problem being keep from the public for an extended period of time.

Business owners publicly announced that they were now arming themselves and would fight back, since the police were doing nothing. There hasn't been news of a single arrest for any of the armed robberies the community has been plagued with. Police told business owners that if they fought back and shot robbers, the business owners would be arrested the same as any other citizen.
